- Limiting Elements
I think I have been fairly selective about what to include on our blog’s page. Also, it being a single column theme helps to avoid overwhelming the viewer.
- Visual Hierarchy (Contrast and Sameness)
I think the most weight (focal point) on the blog are the most recent posts with photos, and the background. The least is probably the text (not including links and titles, which are bright orange), although that works because the text is meant to be supplementary. The formatting of the blog continues throughout, which unifies it. Something that may help would be a more subdued background, but I think the colorful, funky background also brings something that draws viewers in (and it is relevant to our topic).
- Unity (Repetition and Alignment)
The text’s formatting remains the same throughout the blog. Headings and links are brightly colored and pop. I may change the main body of text to match the background, but continue to keep it more subdued than the headings and links. The single-column theme keeps the text aligned, and the text formatting keeps it consistent.
- The Logos of Type Arrangement
The heading of our blog is a focal point when initially viewed. The headers and links also pop against the streamlined look of the main body text, due to being larger and or different hues. Some titles and important parts of articles (mainly at the top of paragraphs or posts) are intentionally bolded. The majority of the font is simple for longer reading.
- The Logos of Using Words and Pictures Together
I think our words and pictures are unified and complement each other. Some of our pictures came with type on them, which happen to go with (even match) our blog’s text. They make sense together and relate to each other.
- Visual analogies
Visual analogies include a “similarity in some respect between things that are otherwise dissimilar” (source). Although the book states that, “…if two or more things are alike in one way, they must be alike in more if not all ways.” I suppose the key point is finding or creating similarities between text and images, or multiples of each. In graphic design, this can mean combining shapes and words to create a coherent design that represents your topic. I am not sure we have many visual analogies in this sense on our blo, since our posts mainly consist of an image (so far, photographs) and text. The WWF logo may be considered a visual analogy because it represents a small portion of their overall campaign.
- Visual accumulation
Accumulation includes a clustering of (usually) visually similar objects. This can be particularly powerful to get across an idea or issue (such as species extinction, pollution and waste, missing persons, etc). Our blog’s consistent format with images might be considered visual accumulation, although it is not as striking. Our archive might be closer to this. I think a particularly impacting image to look for to include would be one of all the species that are extinct, endangered, etc. Perhaps when we have more posts, our archive will mimic this.
- Visual symbols
Symbols are important to consider when designing. They can be timeless, have many interpretations and have significant meaning to different cultures, or they can be modern and associated with an organization, company, or a certain demographic. A symbol we currently have at the top of our blog is the World Wildlife Fund symbol, which is well known and easily recognizable for what it is. I would like to include other banners and links to other conservation-focused organizations, especially if banners and buttons with html coding are readily available (like WWF’s).
